CLOUD KITTEN
The Cloud Kitten is a
nice looking, easy
building, .15 powered
aircraft with a 48 inch
wing span. Designed
by Fred Reese, and
originally featured in
RCM Magazine in
1999, Fred is no
novice to model
aircraft design. For
those who are not
familiar with Fred
Reese or his designs, perhaps listing a few may ring a bell. Going back to 1972
Fred designed the Quickie and El Bandito in 1973. Adding to his list of designs,
lets include a few size variations of the Cloud Dancer and the Simple Series kitted
by Ace RC. Aircraft in the Simple series were the Staggerwing, ME 109, Extra, and
T-6 Texan, and a few others. Fred also had some of his deigns kitted by House of
Balsa.
I’ve discovered 46 designs by Fred and this is the second one I’ve built. From 1/2 A
all the way up to 1.20, Fred has it covered. Electric, glow, scale, civil, racers,
biplanes, float planes, and gliders round out his resume. He certainly has my voter
for the R/C Hall of Fame!
About The Build Not much to say here other than excluding the wing ribs, there’s
only about 10 parts to cut out. The plans show 3 Hitec HS-80 servos for control
which are no longer available. I substituted 3 HS-81’s which will work fine. Full size
servos will work but will be a tighter fit. Model was covered with Ultracote pearl
white, yellow, and true red for trim. A Great Planes L1 .19 size gear was used. Give
this one a try, I guarantee you won’t see one at your local field!
Front View
Wheel pants will need to be finished
up, otherwise it’s almost ready to go.
Angle View
Clean, simple lines make the Kitten
an attractive bird.
.15 Engine
Well tested Enya .15 used for power.
Kitten should fly fine on smaller
engines such as a .09 or .10. Larger
engines than a .15 are not
recommended. The wing is not
stressed for Whack-O G loads.
Top View
Ultracote design on the Kitten was
inspired from the Monokote design
poster. Identical design, I just used
different colors.
